This years County Team Championships were held from 11th to 13th October at Handsworth Golf Club in the West Midlands. It is a traditional well established parkland course steeped in history. We were all looking forward to a near normal tournament with 16 teams taking part from 10 counties, with several counties entering two teams. With the new WHS in operation this year for the first time the association has to rely on the host club to help with set up and input of all the scores. Lee the head pro was most helpful and this worked extremely well and certainly made my job as organiser much easier.
Day 1: The Greensome competition was played in beautiful sunshine and some great scores were returned, with Catrin Russell and Kay Kearton from Derbyshire winning with a score of 41 points. Players did comment on the course playing long but also how they'd enjoyed the challenge and were looking forward to the following two days.
Most teams returned to the comfort of the hotel waiting for good weather in the morning. We were all excited at the prospect of 2 medal rounds over the next 2 days.
Day 2: Some great scores were returned and the score of the day came from Sarah Cranton from Worcestershire with 75 gross. There were some surprises when the team scores were added together. Nottinghamshire performed well and took the lead with a total score of 239, from Worcestershire and Staffordshire, both on 240.We were all looking forward to Bingo and an evening with 'Neil Diamond' and what a night we had, singing sweet Caroline and dancing the night away to Cracklin Rosie. Back to normal. What a great night - we especially liked Neils wig! Oh yes remember we are all here to play golf.
Day 3: With a few sore heads, off we all went, with all to play for. Final scores in and another great score from Sally Shayler of 75 gross. Team scores checked and rechecked and Nottinghamshire were winners by 6 shots from runners-up Staffordshire and Worcestershire in 3rd place. Nett winners were Leicestershire. Individual 36 hole gross was won by Helen Lowe from Leicestershire. The 36 hole Over 65 winner was Gillian Curley from Warwickshire and Gillian was also the 36 hole nett winner.
A great tournament and thanks to Handsworth Golf Club for making us so welcome.
