The 2016 VLGA Jamboree was held at Panmure Golf Club from 1st to 4th August.
Day 1 Tuesday 2nd August Midlands v Scotland
We arrived at the club to find the wind had turned 180 degrees from the practise round and we were teeing off the first into a strong wind!
We had two rookies this year Debbie Warren and Sally Sketcher who both made their debut in the morning foursomes. The rest of the team being Julie Brown, Lindsey Shaw, Helen Lowe, Carol Wild, Mary Maclaren and Sue Spencer. All 3 matches were very tight as the players adapted to the course and the wind! With one match won and two halved we finished 2-1 up.
The team came out in the afternoon with all guns blazing and put in a terrific performance winning the afternoon session 5½ - ½ so 7½ - 1½ overall. North v South results was 4½ - 4½.
Day 2 Wednesday 3rd August South v Midlands.
The wind had turned round again 180 degrees and was just as strong! The conditions were not easy - the wind was cold and we experienced heavy rain showers. The team battled on and finished the morning 2-1 down. The team put up a tremendous battle in the afternoon session with 4 matches going to the 18th - 2 won, 2 lost and 2 halved! If only the putts had been kind to us and dropped. Result 5 -4 to the South but we had them scared! Scotland v North 6½ - 2½ to the North.
Day 3 Thursday 4th August Midlands v North
As typical of links golf the wind was now blowing across the course! Unfortunately due to injuries we were one man down! The team put up a gallant fight but we went into lunch 2 -1 down. All to play for in the afternoon. The team played their hearts out but the opposition were very strong and we went down 4½ - 1½ losing overall 6½ - 2½. Scotland v South 6 -3 to the South. Congratulations to the North for winning the Miller Stirling Salver.
The Midlands ended up a very credible 3rd overall. The course and the weather were very testing and the team coped well and I thank them for their support and determination. A special thanks to Gillian Curley my Vice-Captain and Jean Johnson our Lady President for their advice and support.
Thanks also to those that sent cards and messages of support and a very big thank you to the 7 ladies who travelled up to support and caddy (plus Tim!). It was a very long way and we really appreciated your support. Roll on next year at Frilford Heath!
